A Bridgeport man stole money from two patients at a residential treatment facility this spring and was arrested Tuesday, police said.
New Canaan police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:
Police received complaints about identity theft from patients at the facility on March 28 and April 18.
The 29-year-old man, an employee at the facility where both patients were being treated, stole over $11,000. The money was used to buy items on Amazon Marketplace. He used some of the funds opened an account with Southern Connecticut Gas for a home in Bridgeport.
The New Canaan Police Investigative Section obtained an arrest warrant for the man based on the investigation, the report said.
Homeland Security at John F. Kennedy Airport contacted New Canaan Police on Tuesday, Aug. 1, when the man was on a passenger manifest to Barcelona, Spain. He was taken into custody by authorities at JFK while attempting to board his flight on Aug. 2. He stayed in custody there until New Canaan police took custody of him the next day, after he waived his right to an extradition hearing.
He was charged with first and second-degree identity theft and two accounts of third-degree larceny. He was held on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Monday, Aug. 7.
