The town on Feb. 27 received an application to build Merritt Village, the 110-unit complex on the Maple and Park Streets block at the edge of downtown New Canaan, approved in November 2016 by the Planning & Zoning Commission. The application calls for four multi-family residential buildings with 167,746 gross square feet and a combination of underground and surface parking.

The Board of Finance on Thursday night voted unanimously to approve a town-wide budget for next fiscal year of $150.9 million—an overall increase of 1.89 percent—including a Board of Education operating budget of $89.7 million. The school district figure is $900,000 less than requested. The finance board cannot instruct New Canaan Public Schools how to spend the money. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Bryan Luizzi during a hearing on Tuesday outlined ways that $500,000 could be saved from the district’s spending plan without affecting programming. The Town Council now takes up the budget. Finance board Vice Chairman Bob Spangler alone voted against the school board budget item, a 2.45 percent year-over-year increase. He spoke out against the spirit of the additional $400,00 reduction beyond what had been discussed earlier in the week and, with Chris Le Bris, also raised a question of whether that money should be listed as a “health insurance’ or ‘operating expense’ line item for the BOE—something the finance board did not resolve immediately.

My understanding is that the final approval for Merritt Village was to construct up to 105 units — not 110 units. Can you please confirm?
Betty the initial approval from P&Z was for 110 units. Whether some of those are to be combined under M2 Partners’ building plans to create fewer, larger apartments I do not know.
