Department of Public Works officials said during a budget hearing before the Town Council Wednesday night that the new recycling bins to appear downtown later this calendar year will be a shade of green, rather than blue. Why? Because blue is the color Darien, home of the Blue Wave (as well as the Interstate 95 and Route 1 corridors).

A reminder that from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 23, NORDIC Cryotherapy at Halo Studios on Grove Street is offering free trial sessions—register here. Whole body cryotherapy, which means “cold treatment,” is a very brief procedure (the entire treatment is only three minutes) that exposes the body to temperatures of about minus 264 degrees. Although it has been around since the ‘70s where it was used widely in Japan to treat a number of ailments, it has gained radical popularity in the West in recent years, especially among elite athletes as a more efficient way to soothe and repair sore muscles.

New Canaan’s Keith Simpson in a recent and widely read letter to New Canaanite recommended Mary Louise King’s comprehensive local history book for a future town-wide reading project—and mentioned in the letter that the 1981 book itself, “Portrait of New Canaan,” may need re-publishing. In fact, we hear, the book is out of print and, if Simpson’s vision were to materialize, it could only happen if someone undertakes getting a print run done, as the number of copies needed is significant.

Seventeen teams from New Canaan competed in the Connecticut tournament on March 18, and four other Saxe teams and two NCHS teams also qualified for World Finals with 1st- and 2nd-place showings.

The 1.6 percent operating budget increase for New Canaan Public Schools, now before the Town Council, would be the lowest bump for the district in at least 20 years, according to research cited by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Bryan Luizzi. With wage increases built into contracts, the district is looking at a hard reduction year-over-year to its discretionary budget.

Oxygen Fitness and Bankwell are partnering to sponsor the first-ever New Canaan High School Color Run. Designed to mark the New Canaan High School Scholarship Foundation’s 50th anniversary, the Color Run will be held at 9 a.m. on April 29, with a rain date of April 30. Students and adults of all ages will run/walk in either the Kids’ Color Dash, which is .8-miles for younger children, or the NC Color Run, an approximately 5K distance. Both events will have start and finish lines at the high school and will feature “Color Stations” along the route where powdered, washable paint will be thrown in the air to create the “color run.”  There will also be food and a D.J. to celebrate at the start/finish line.

Oxygen also gets a shout-out this week from LiveGirl, the local nonprofit organization founded by New Canaanite Sheri West. The Pine Street fitness biz hosted a mother-daughter empowerment workshop and girls’ leadership summit titled ‘Strong Girls = Strong World.’ Attendees learned about girls’ education and laughed as they bonded and worked out with Oxygen trainer Megan Hoffman. The girls’ leadership summit brought together 60 middle school girls from across Fairfield County for leadership development and team building.
