Police have arrested a 22-year-0ld New Canaan man whose name was on five checks that they said were stolen and forged from two local men in April.
The two men, both 28 years old, had allowed a woman to stay in their home when she needed a home this spring. In April, one of the men told police he noticed that $300 in cash was missing, then found some checks were missing and had been cashed.
Some of the cashed checks were made out to the woman or had her endorsement on them, according to police.
Then, one of the roommates noticed $300 in cash missing from his room, and when confronted the woman guest told them she didn’t take it, according to a police report. After that, the roommate found unusual activity in his bank account.
He had a $100 check pending that he didn’t write, and noticed that a total of five checks had been written in his name. In all, between the roommates, $530 in checks had been written. The 22-year-old man, arrested Aug. 8 on a warrant, also had his name signed on the back of the checks.
In two warrants, the man is charged with fifth- and sixth-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit larceny and two counts of third-degree forgery. His bond was set at $2,000 and he is scheduled to appear Aug. 21 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
