A 21-year-old man in Waveny Park was charged with intent to sell more than an ounce of marijuana after a police dog sniffed it out, New Canaan police said.

New Canaan Police Patrol CarPolice gave this account (an accusation not proven in court):

A police officer saw a vehicle without a front license plate traveling west through the park at 8:58 p.m., Wednesday. When the officer stopped the vehicle and spoke with the driver, a Norwalk resident, the officer could smell burnt marijuana.

Asked if he had marijuana in the car, the driver said he did and pointed to an open compartment in the center console. A rolled marijuana cigarette was in the compartment.

New Canaan Police Dog Apollo was brought in to sniff around and indicated there was marijuana in the console — and also under the front seat, where a clear plastic food bag had more than an ounce of a green, leafy substance that later tested positive for marijuana. The plastic bag was inside a regular pillow case.

A red vapor smoke pipe was also found in the car.

The driver was charged with possession with intent to sell over an ounce of marijuana, possession of more than an ounce of marijuana, illegal possession of marijuana near a school (New Canaan High School was within 1,500 feet of where the driver was), and not displaying a front license plate (an infraction).

The man, a resident of Deerfield Street in Norwalk, was later released on $5,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear Aug. 20 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
