One of the parties that contacted First Selectman Kevin Moynihan last month to express interest in acquiring a piece of town-owned property at Lapham and Talmadge Hill Roads was the Talmadge Hill Community Church, which is located catty-corner (in Darien). Church officials told Moynihan they’d like to move across the street, he said. ***

The town on Monday received a notice of a lawsuit filed on behalf of the owners of 62 and 64 Main St., appealing the Board of Assessment Appeals’ decision to uphold the Oct. 1 valuation of their property. The commercial buildings house Chef Prasad and Ching’s Table restaurants.

The New Canaan Building Department on Tuesday received an after-the-fact application from the owner of 1541 Oenoke Ridge Road who had completed an estimated $150,000 kitchen remodel without obtaining a permit. The work included installation of new cabinets, countertops and appliances, moving a sink, running a propane line and reconfiguring lighting. ***

New Canaan Police at 11:26 p.m. Monday cited a 20-year-old Norwalk man for possession of less than .5 ounces of marijuana after stopping him on East Avenue for driving with a defective brake light. ***

New Canaan High School graduate Curt Casali went 3-for-4 Thursday for the Cincinnati Reds in the team’s 5-0 win over Miami. In 16 at-bats this season, New Canaan’s first MLB player is hitting .375 with an OPS of .938.

‘We Are Supporting Each Other’: New Canaan Merchants Keep Business in Town

When walking down Elm Street on a sunny Saturday afternoon, it is more than likely that one will hear a couple visitors from New York City or beyond lament that New Canaan seems to be ripped from an episode of “Gilmore Girls.” Indeed, this town offers many of the same surface qualities as the fictional Star’s Hollow, with a beautiful downtown and quirky residents and business owners. The similarities go deeper, however; on the show, it is not uncommon to see Luke, the owner of the local diner, cross the street to buy supplies from Doosey’s Market. It’s a perfect illustration of local charm; these two small businesses support each other while also contributing to the integrity of the town. If it seems too good to be happening in real life, it’s not, and businesses right here in New Canaan are using the same model.

The town is under a Winter Storm Warning from the National Weather Service through 6 p.m. Temperatures will drop into the 20’s and officials warn of dangerous driving conditions with “snow covered roads and poor visibilities,” according to the Upton, N.Y. based weather service. “Blowing and drifting snow is likely,” the agency said. “Local power outages with downed trees and power lines [are] possible.”
