The town is under a Winter Storm Warning from the National Weather Service through 6 p.m. Temperatures will drop into the 20’s and officials warn of dangerous driving conditions with “snow covered roads and poor visibilities,” according to the Upton, N.Y. based weather service.

“Blowing and drifting snow is likely,” the agency said. “Local power outages with downed trees and power lines [are] possible.”

Officials at New Canaan’s hardware and home goods store, Weed & Duryea on Grove Street, said they’re opening for business at 7 a.m. and that salt, shovels, ice scrapers, sand and roof melt all are in stock.

Department of Public Works Director Tiger Mann said the town’s highway and parks crews prepared Wednesday for the storm, as usual, checking equipment such as trucks, salt spreaders and plows. The DPW has an open line with the weather service and determines arrival times for crews based on the most updated information, he said.

“We pre-treat all roads and begin the snow plowing and removal processes as conditions warrant,” Mann said.

Metro-North Railroad at 8:30 a.m. reported continued “good service” on the New Canaan branch line.
