New Canaan Biz on Biz: Pennyweights on The Candy Scoop

Though Kelly Sigg has owned Elm Street mainstay Pennyweights with husband Geoff for 14 years, it wasn’t until three months ago that a business arrived in town to capture both her heart and sweet tooth. “I love the salted caramel at The Candy Scoop,” Sigg told NewCanaanite.com when asked about her local favorites for “Biz on Biz.” “The mixture of the salt with the sweetness, it’s delicious,” she said. Sigg isn’t alone in that opinion. Megan Palladino, a 2009 New Canaan High School graduate and town resident who owns The Candy Scoop with big sister Lauren, said the shop’s “Lake Champlain Sea Salt Caramels” became so popular so quickly that they sold out.

Fender-Bender at Mobil Station Yields Arrests

New Canaan police arrested a pair of nonresidents who switched seats in a car after a minor motor vehicle accident downtown, then lied about it. According to police, the man—32 years old, from Eric Street in Bridgeport—was at the wheel of a 2000 Audi just before 5 p.m. on Feb. 4 when it collided in the parking lot at the Mobil station with another car, according to a police report. That vehicle, a 2003 Ford, was being driven by an 18-year-old New Canaan man, police Sgt. Carol Ogrinc said.

Police: New Canaan Man Arrested after Striking Teen

Police arrested a 52-year-old Birchwood Avenue man by warrant Saturday and charged him with risk of injury to a minor, third-degree assault and disorderly conduct. He is accused of hitting his girlfriend’s teenage son in the face, causing minor injuries, according to police. The incident, reported by the girlfriend, took place on the night of Jan. 19, according to New Canaan police Sgt. Carol Ogrinc. Police were unable to serve the warrant until this past weekend because it was difficult to contact the man, Ogrinc said.

The spring market in New Canaan is showing “plenty of activity,” says Chris Sigg, a Realtor at William Raveis in town, with 15 open houses this past weekend “and more coming on the market in the coming weeks.” “List prices have come up almost 10 percent in the past year but this isn’t keeping the buyers from taking advantage of low interest rates,” Sigg tells NewCanaanite.com. “Inventory is low and houses are selling quicker. ”
