Police cited a 20-year-old Avalon Drive East man on minor pot charges after spotting him and a friend behaving suspiciously at Lakeview Cemetery across the street.

At about 5:18 p.m. on May 6, an officer on patrol saw two young men walking into the cemetery and pointing in a certain direction, according to a police report. When the young men (the other was also 20 years old, from Wilton) saw the officer, they quickly changed direction, the report said.

Police in the past have found kids smoking pot and drinking beer in the cemetery, officials said.

The officer pulled into the cemetery and approached the young men, the report said.

There, when asked whether they had pot or other drugs on them, one of the young men said no and the other didn’t answer, the report said.

Asked again, the Avalon Drive East man said that he had drugs in his left front pocket, the report said, and removed the plastic bag, which had a small amount of marijuana, as well as rolling papers and a pack of Zen-brand filter tips.

He was cited for possession of less than .5 ounces of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
