Police are investigating what appears to be an attempted fraud last week at the CVS on Park Street.

At about 2:10 p.m. on April 15, a woman attempted to use multiple credit cards to buy $484.36 worth of baby formula, pampers, Easter cards and gift cards (the last being the big, $400 item), according to New Canaan Police Sgt. Carol Ogrinc.

While ringing her up, a problem arose with credit card authorization, which the manager at the store—who later called police—tried to secure, according to a police report.

The suspect became agitated and because there were other customers there, the store manager gave her back the ID and credit card, Ogrinc said.

The suspect—described as black and wearing a black hat and workout-style pants with a dark shirt and sneakers—was seen getting into a newer model Mitsubishi sedan on Cherry Street, driven by a man.

CVS reported the attempted fraud the following day.

Police arrested a 63-year-old New Canaan man at 4:43 p.m. on April 16 and charged him with driving under the influence.

He failed field sobriety tests after police saw him park behind a building at Mead Park just where Grove Street comes into Richmond Hill, walk slowly, stumbling out of his car and make as though he would urinate on the building, Ogrinc said.

Officers on scene smelled alcohol and administered the tests, police said.

He was released on bond and scheduled to appear April 28 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
