It’s Spirit Week at New Canaan High School, and Tuesday was “Costume Day.” The photos above were snapped at ABC House of New Canaan Tuesday morning (thanks, John). ABC House is set to hold its 42 annual fundraiser at the Country Club of New Canaan. The gala will include a live auction and raffle, and will be attended by ABC scholars, their families and host families. Here’s more information on the event and how to get tickets.

Boston, Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Tulsa, Detroit … New Canaan. What do they have in common? According to this list, they’re “America’s Most Crazily Prideful Hometowns.” Not sure the writer here understands that our train station is located in such proximity to God’s Acre—otherwise, not a bad title to earn. Congratulations to Animal Control Officer Allyson Halm, who on Tuesday was approved by the Board of Selectmen to take over as the full-time officer in the New Canaan Police Department’s unit. She succeeds Officer Maryann Kleinschmitt, who will retire at month’s end. The town’s human resources director, Cheryl Pickering-Jones, said Halm comes with a “wealth of information.” Selectman Nick Williams said, “If she reminds you of Maryann, that’s good.” First Selectman Rob Mallozzi, said Halm has “big shoes to fill.” “That is a high bar Maryann set, that’s for sure,” he said.

Firefighters at 11:15 a.m. Monday rushed to Waveny Park on a report of a brush fire. Arriving, Fire Chief Jack Hennessey tells us, they found a small area of brush at the base of a tree smoldering. It was over by the water towers and likely was ignited by a tree branch falling and hitting a power line, he said.

New Canaan Police on Friday brought a felony charge of first-degree forgery—as well as conspiracy to commit first-degree forgery, fifth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit fifth-degree larceny—against a 26-year-old Orange, N.J. man who is accused of passing counterfeit $100 bills at Walgreens in May.

Congratulations to New Canaan’s Charlie Sokolowski, who for his Eagle Scout project installed Buddy Benches at the elementary schools in town. The benches are designed to help kids connect with each other: Whenever someone wants a “buddy,” they sit on the bench and the idea is that a willing pal comes over to hang out.

On Saturday, Sept. 26, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration the New Canaan’s Police Department and Walgreens announced their participation in the nationwide prescription drug “Take-Back” initiative that seeks to prevent increased medication abuse and promote the proper disposal of medications. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., potentially dangerous, expired, unused, and unwanted prescription and over the counter medications will be collected for destruction at Walgreens located at 36 Pine St. The service is free and anonymous. Prescription and over the counter medications will be accepted.

Town officials on Tuesday approved a contract with Morton Salt to buy 3,000 tons of treated salt ($262,290) for keeping roads clear during and after snow storms this coming winter. Highway Superintendent Mose Saccary of the DPW said that last winter New Canaan set its high-water mark for salt purchased to treat town roads, at 2,925 tons.

New Canaan Mounted Troop, a nonprofit organization located on Carter Street, was honored by the EQUUS Foundation with a $5,000 “Horse Whisperer Grant.” NCMT, which helps develop leadership, responsibility and confidence in youth through sound horsemanship, three years ago launched its “Super Troopers” therapeutic equine care and riding programs for children and adults with physical, developmental, emotional, and intellectual disabilities. The organization relies entirely on donated horses and ponies. Find more information here.

Rotary Club of New Canaan will 2015 Family Lobsterfest this Friday night and all day Saturday at the New Canaan Historical Society, 13 Oenoke Ridge Road. (Rt.124). Bankwell this week launched a new campaign that includes a multi-media mix of television, radio, print, digital and out-of-home. The bank hired New Canaan-based creative director Mike Wilson and his firm, Jumpinfish, LLC, to create and produce its ad campaign, which features real people in and around local Fairfield and New Haven landmarks. Highlights include a 30 second spot which will run for 8 weeks on cable channels, including CNBC, CNN, MSNBC, Bloomberg, ESPN, Food Network, A&E and HGTV. The commercial will also appear in live-streaming sports broadcasts and online video.

This past summer’s Camp LiveGirl was such a success in creating opportunities for the middle school girls of Fairfield County to come together, that it’s extending into several LiveGirl Leadership Summits during the school year. The first summit will involve 40 middle school girls from Bridgeport, Stamford and New Canaan and be held 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2 at Wakeman Boys & Girls Club in Bridgeport.

This just in: The Recidivists won the annual “Rich-Mich Softball Game” by a score of 14-7. The 18th annual contest was held at St. Luke’s School on Sunday. Playing for the Richey Recidivists were: George Bennington, Rick DeNey, Sam DeNey, Mark Rajkowski, Hans Dijs, Doug Dooley, Rick Kilbride, Kevin Wilder, and captain Keith Richey. For the Michno Maurauders, Peter Bennington, Roger Bolton, Will Fornshell, James O’Hora, Jim Petrus, Paul Price, Chip Steppacher, Luke Tashjian, Chas Timberlake, and captain Tim Michno. The Recidivists 14-7 prevailed over the Marauders in a well-played, injury-free contest on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. The Marauders were leading 5-3 going into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Recidivists put together a string of line drives, scoring 9 runs, and taking an 14 to 5 lead. The Marauders scored 2 runs in the top of the seventh inning in a valiant come-back attempt that fell short. Along the way, there was a home run by Luke Tashjian and triples by Rick Kilbride and Chas Timberlake. This once a year men’s softball game has become a New Canaan tradition. The teams are picked at random from those weekend (also weakened) warriors who show up to see if they still have the right stuff, generally local men in their 40s to 60s.
