Police at 7:55 a.m. Thursday arrested a 47-year-old Binghamton, N.Y. man and charged him with second-degree failure to appear. The man turned himself in on an active paperless re-arrest warrant. He’d been arrested in October 2014 and charged by New Canaan Police with sixth-degree larceny, court records show.

The proposed selectmen’s budget unveiled this week includes earmarks of $30,000 for fiscal year 2023 and $250,000 the following year for the Animal Control shelter. First Selectman Kevin Moynihan said Thursday that if the New Canaan YMCA doesn’t take over the vacated residence at Kiwanis Park under a possible future partnership with the town, the structure could be converted for use as a new animal shelter.

Police at 2:03 p.m. Wednesday arrested a 29-year-old Bridgeport man following a car crash at Carter Street and Route 123. Police found that an active paperless re-arrest warrant was out on one of those involved in the crash. He’d been cited about three years ago for possession of less than .5 ounces of marijuana, court records show.

Fourth-generation New Canaanite Meredith Bach has been appointed president of the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Bach’s family had owned and run the Melba Inn at Park and Cherry Streets for more than 75 years. She’s involved in local organizations that include the Hannah Benedict Carter Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and New Canaan Historical Society. The director of marketing at Rand Insurance, she succeeds Tom Stadler in the Chamber role.

New Canaan-based Grace Farms Foundation on Thursday announced that it will host training and other sessions with personnel from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency with a goal of “improving criminal investigations and communication networks that can lead to the successful prosecution of perpetrators.”

The Exchange Club of New Canaan is accepting qualified grant applications through March 31. The service organization has granted more than $1 million to local charities in the past 10 years. Nonprofits such as the Parenting Skills Center in Stamford, ABC of New Canaan, GetAbout, Arts for Healing and more than 28 others have received grants in recent years.

Finally, congratulations to the New Canaan High School girls and boys squash teams. Here’s a roundup of recent wins from Lisa Platt:
“The girls’ varsity squash team continues its great season and now stands in an impressive third place in the FairWest League. The team of 12 girls, led by senior Tara Chugh and junior co-captains Sophie Havens and Lili Beecher, has been on a hot streak. They blanked three different teams 7-0 (Staples, Hackley and Street Squash) over the last several weeks. They played rival Darien for the second time this season and beat them again, this time by a score of 6-1, which is an improvement over the original 4-3 win. Squash Haven, who is second in the league, beat the girls 5-2, but there were several close matches that could have gone either way. The boys’ varsity squash team currently has a 5-5 record in the FairWest league, a solid improvement from a 2-4 start. The team has upped its game as they beat St. Luke’s 6-1, beat Street Squash in NYC 7-0, not dropping a single game, and eked out a close 4-3 win over Squash Haven at Yale, with wins by senior co-captains Brad Hennessy and Jamie Cutler and juniors Charles Brossy and Austin Platt. The only recent defeat was a 6-1 loss to a strong Hackley squad. The boys’ JV team lost a close 4-3 match to Briarcliff, but it turned it around with a 4-3 victory over Rye, with wins from Shea Smith, Praja Tickoo, Will Casey and Aidan Stant. The JV team scored 7-0 wins over Street Squash in NYC and Squash Haven at Yale. This year, the large number of boys has allowed for a third team to play (the JV B squad), and although they lost their first 2 matches, they notched their first win 6-1 against Fairfield HS’s B squad.”
