The town on April 12 issued a permit to demolish the 1952-built Cape at 71 Hillcrest Road down to the foundation (which will remain). A Stamford couple bought the property in March for $900,000, tax records show. The lot includes one acre in the 1-acre zone.

New Canaan Police reported this week the department has seen seven vandalism-related incidents through March 2019, compared to just three in the same quarter last year. Authorities also reported during the Police Commission’s regular meeting that fraud-related incidents have declined from 26 to 11 since last year, while motor vehicle violations are up to 1,218 this year from 1,170 in 2018.

Two of New Canaan’s most popular food service establishments—Farmer’s Table on Forest Street and Rosie on Elm—aced unannounced health inspections in the past week. Farmer’s Table scored 95 out of 100 possible points during an April 16 inspection conducted by a New Canaan Health Department sanitarian, while Rosie earned a score of 93 out of 100, with only minor citations. One minor citation at Rose was ““Bare hand contact with ready-to-eat food items (scones).”

The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk is seeking volunteers to help tag horseshoe crabs as they come out of Long Island Sound to spawn in the sand. New volunteers must attend one of two training sessions to be held at the Maritime Aquarium from 6 to 7 p.m. on May 2 or 7. Get more details or sign up here.

New Canaan-based nonprofit organization LiveGirl recently hosted its annual “Your Voice Matters” leadership summit, a bi-partisan educational gathering designed to teach young women the importance of advocacy.  After learning about some of the key legislative issues that affect girls and women, participants selected a topic important to them and worked with peers to develop a “call to action.” The summit was sponsored by the League of Women Voters.

Finally, we note that New Canaan Library will host Paula Hornbostel, director and a trustee of the Lachaise Foundation, as guest lecturer for its annual Stoddard Art Lecture. Hornbostel will speak about Gaston Lachaise, one of the 20th Century’s most daring and celebrated sculptors. The lecture will be held at 6:30 p.m. next Wednesday in the Adrian Lamb Room, preceded by a light reception at 6 p.m. Free, registration required.
