We heard that the New Canaan Y has put off indefinitely its proposal to “bubble” the Waveny Pool for winter use while it undergoes an expansion that includes a new aquatic center. Officials at the Park & Recreation Commission say the Y is focusing on fundraising now while it works on a plan for its swimmers.

New Canaan High School 2014 grad Kit Mallozzi has been named to the Dean’s List at Syracuse University. Kit, winner of a Student Leadership Award as a NCHS senior, finished her first semester with the Orange with a perfect 4.0, proud father Rob Mallozzi said. “She just loves it there,” he said.

A light moment unexpectedly broke up the room during the district’s budget proposal Thursday before the Board of Finance and Town Council. During a discussion of network security in the public schools, town councilman Sven Englund began to say, “I don’t think you can under-spend on that …” when fellow councilman John Engel admonished him with a smile: “Don’t say that.” Englund responded: “I can say that because I’m a Democrat.”

During the same meeting, it was revealed that the building that long has housed the Board of Ed’s administrative headquarters—at 39 Locust Ave.—is on the market. According to a flyer from the property’s broker, RHYS Commercial, the full property—39 and 49-51 Locust Ave.—includes 33,773 square feet on 1.01 acres. Tax records list two different owners for numbers 39 and 49.

The owner of two Forest Street properties paid off a delinquent local tax bill, so New Canaan’s first-ever “tax sale”—a March 5 auctioning off of properties whose owners are late on paying property taxes—now is expected to include these three lots: 527 Smith Ridge Road, 61 Sturbridge Hill Road and 1032 Silvermine Road.
