A new movie directed by 1996 New Canaan High School graduate Theo Avgerinos, “Americons”—see trailer above—is set to open next Friday in 15 markets nationwide, including New York and Los Angeles. One description of the film says it is “based on a true story and centers on an ex-college football star who gets a second chance. The crime drama is set in Los Angeles and unfolds during the subprime mortgage boom.” Theo’s dad is Michael Avgerinos, chairman of the Town Hall Building Committee. Just as New Canaan Fire Department ceremonies were underway Tuesday night at Lapham, around 7:56 p.m., firefighters could be seen exiting quickly from the festivities. A call came in that there was smoke at a Michigan Road residence and its occupants were advised to evacuate. Thankfully, the problem seems to have resolved itself by the time the first engine arrived on scene less than 10 minutes later.

It isn’t clear what’s going in next.

The municipal body that kickstarted New Canaan’s discussion about possible remote participation (from a phone) in public meetings this week voted 8-1 to take up a policy introduced by the Board of Selectmen (see page 28 of this PDF). The lone dissenting vote on the Park & Recreation Commission was from Andrea Peterson.

Gov. Dannel Malloy on Tuesday joined state officials—there appeared to be about 20 of them in all, a big number—in announcing additional M-8 cars for Metro-North Railroad’s New Canaan branch line. Elected officials and the governor described the spur as critically important and took a symbolic ride to New Canaan and back from the Springdale station. Minutes after Malloy wrapped up his speech on the freezing cold platform, an announcement rang out that the train was operating five minutes late.
