Though regular phone calls to 9-1-1 remain the best and fastest way to contact emergency services, all New Canaan Police Department officers who operate the emergency call center there have been trained in the state’s new 9-1-1 texting feature, according to Police Chief Leon Krolikowski. Anyone texting the numbers ‘911’ as a recipient on a mobile device may send a brief written message that includes the location of the emergency and what services are needed—police, fire or ambulance. The technology “is useful for the hearing impaired, during a domestic violence incident or active threat incident, and during medical emergencies that render a person incapable of speech,” Krolikowski said in a press release. With a light breeze and soft green, the shot landed 18 inches from the pole and spun into the cup. He was playing with my regular weekday crew including good friends Chris Brown, Steve Armstrong and brother Andre. Congratulations, Chris!

For the first time since its founding in 1974, the ABC House of New Canaan has two brothers living under its roof at the same time. Ryan (a senior) and Richard (a freshman) Hernandez are from the Bronx, N.Y. Richard watched his older brother for the past three years, have the opportunity to attend New Canaan High School and live in the house on the hill at 64 Locust Ave., with the other ABC students, officials said. “When it was his chance to apply for a scholarship spot at one of the ABC programs, his sights were clearly set on New Canaan. Richard’s grades and teacher recommendations were excellent in middle school. When he was interviewed by the selection committee, it became he was going to be a standout ABC student.” In addition, Osasu Uwa-Omede is a new freshman at ABC New Canaan and Osasu’s twin sister, Osara, is a resident of the girl’s ABC house in Darien. Finally, here’s a spotlight on one of New Canaan’s standout youth sports teams, in a write up submitted by Allison Totaro (photos below):
New Canaan 8 Red Field Hockey Shuts out Ridgefield 6-0
It was a beautiful day for 8 Red Field Hockey on the first day of autumn. The perfect playing weather on New Canaan’s home turf proved to be advantageous as the team dominated Ridgefield. Despite the fact that one strong player was sidelined due to an injury received at last week’s game, New Canaan shut out Ridgefield on Saturday, Sept. 22, winning 6-0.
Not a single shot was taken on either of the goalkeepers, Amelia Totaro and Delaney Hoey. This was a testimony to the offense and defense. Both goalkeepers showed their dedication by playing in the 8 Black game immediately beforehand. Polly Parsons-Hills lead the team offense with a hat trick and two assists followed by Taylor Cloud with two goals and Victoria Lockhart with one goal. Katherine O’Connell had one assist. Ridgefield couldn’t get past Abby Evans with three stops and two clears of the ball, giving NC 8 Red the advantage.
This win puts the team at 2-1-0 for the season after a tough loss to Darien last week.
