NewCanaanite.com on Tuesday night published its 3,000th article since launching on Jan. 31, 2014.

The story, which deals with New Canaan’s cherished Waveny Park and an active nonprofit group dedicated to its preservation, falls into one of the major quality-of-life categories (public parks) that form the core of the local news website’s coverage. Others include traffic, pets and wildlife, parking, local history, the downtown and land use.
Most articles are written by 1993 New Canaan High School graduate Michael Dinan, interviewed last week by Street Fight Magazine about the New Canaanite and its operation as a single-person media outlet. Contributing writers include his brother Terry Dinan, who lives in town, New Canaanite Darcy Pennoyer Smith, 2009 NCHS grad Jes Sauerhoff and a host of high school and college interns.
New Canaanite produces four or five local news articles per day, and they’re emailed directly to subscribers (for free) on weekdays through our daily newsletter—sign up here. The newsletter also includes a list of upcoming events that our readers and local community members upload to our calendar.
The site topped 1 million pageviews in 2015, its first full calendar year, and now regularly exceeds 100,000 PVs and 30,000 unique visitors per month. It is supported entirely through local advertising on the website, in its newsletter, website and special sections—for example, the Holiday Guide that ran last November-December.
NewCanaanite.com in May earned 18 ‘Excellence in Journalism’ awards in the Hyperlocal category from the Connecticut Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists for work published in 2015, including eight first-place awards.
