Police cited two New Canaan teens Saturday night on minor pot possession charges after stopping their car downtown for a defective headlight.
At about 8:16 p.m. on Feb. 7, an officer pulled over a 17-year-old boy—who had another 17-year-old and 16-year-old in the car—as the motorist traveled westbound on East Avenue near Cherry Street, according to a police report.
The officer smelled marijuana when he approached the car, and when he asked the teens about it, they told him they didn’t know what he was talking about, the report said.
Searching the vehicle, police found rolling papers in the wallet of the 16-year-old, more rolling papers under the driver’s seat, and a pen case under the passenger seat that had a baggie of pot, smoking pipe, metal grinder, vaporizer, scraping tool and small container of THC oil in it, the report said. THC is the active chemical ingredient in marijuana.
Confronted with those items, the boys told police they had no idea where the gear had come from, the report said.
All three were charged with possession of less than .5 ounce of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. The motorist additionally was cited for the defective headlight.
Police withheld their names because of their ages.
Their cases were referred to the Juvenile Matters Division of state Superior Court in Stamford, where they’re scheduled to appear Feb. 17.
