Barking Dog Complaint: ‘Just Give Me The Ticket And Tell Me Who I Sue’

Police say a 42-year-old New Canaan woman became “very defensive” when they followed up on a barking dog complaint at home on Spring Water Lane recently, telling an Animal Control officer trying to resolve the problem, “Just give me the ticket and tell me who I sue,” according to an incident report. The woman, and a man who owns and resides at the house, appear to be breeding and selling English Springer Spaniel puppies, and the New Canaan Police Department’s inquiry into the noise complaints started at about 2 p.m. on July 9 (a Thursday), according to the report. That’s when a next-door neighbor phoned Animal Control “stating that there are small dogs barking all day long and are brought in about 2 p.m. every day,” according to a police report. The neighbor told Animal Control that the dogs “are left out in a crate and it doesn’t look like it has any covering,” the report said. The following day, Animal Control Officer Maryann Kleinschmitt investigated the report, and on that initial visit saw no dogs outside and heard no barking.

Police: Provoked Dog Bites 2-Year-Old Boy in the Face

An 11-year-golden retriever is under home quarantine on Oenoke Ridge Road after the dog bit a 2-year-old boy in the face, officials say. It happened shortly before 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, according to a police report. The boy and his parents had come in from out of town to visit relatives, and the child cornered the dog and was tugging on its ear when the golden retriever snapped, according to the report. The animal had no history of biting and adults were present and watching as the incident unfolded, according to the Animal Control unit of the New Canaan Police Department. The golden retriever is up-to-date on its vaccines and is undergoing a mandatory 2-week quarantine at home.

2-Week Quarantine for German Shepherd after Biting Woman on Bowery Road

Police issued a Bowery Road man a $92 fine for nuisance dog after his German shepherd ran off-property and bit a woman walking by in the inner right thigh, puncturing her skin. It happened on July 16 and the 2-year-old male dog has no history of biting, according to Animal Control Officer Maryann Kleinschmitt. The dog’s owner emerged from the home, near Oenoke Ridge Road, and controlled his dog when he realized what happened. The dog underwent a legally required 2-week quarantine at an area veterinarian, which ended Thursday, Kleinschmitt said.

As Temps Soar, New Canaan Animal Control Urges Dog Owners To Take Precautions

As temperatures soared toward the mid-90s Wednesday and with thunderstorms expected Thursday, New Canaan Animal Control officials are urging residents to be extra mindful of their dogs’ health and safety. “It’s going to get hot and ugly,” Animal Control Officer Allyson Halm told NewCanaanite.com. If it’s not possible to switch to an early-morning or evening schedule, dog owners who like to jog with their dogs should shorten their runs and understand that any dog over seven years old is considered senior—like puppies, those older dogs are more susceptible to heat exhaustion. “Also, the hot pavement,” Halm said. “People don’t realize that when the sun is beating down these sidewalks—put your hand down there and see how long you’d last.
