Everyone Happy To See Pop Up Park’s Return

The opening of the Pop Up Park at South and Elm last Friday went smoothly. “Everybody seems happy to have it back,” Jeff Holland, a member of the Pop Up Park committee, said.  “We are seeing people that we haven’t seen since the last time we set up.”

The temporary park displayed a mixture of New Canaanites relaxing, talking, and eating under the shade of the new park umbrellas and children participating in the olympic-themed events hosted by the YMCA. Thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation, the Pop Up Park committee was able to add pots full of radiant flower blossoms as well as more tables with varying heights. Tucker Murphy, a founding member of the Pop Up Park volunteer committee, said that the park “is supposed to be flexible.

Teen Girls Obsessed With Shopping and Netflix

For this installment of “5 Things I’m Obsessed With,” I ran into these three teens on their way for a quick dinner after a long day of typical summer fun. For Chloe, Victoria, and Charlotte, hanging out with friends to shop or watch Netflix is all apart of their everyday summer lifestyle. ‘A Part of His Life Now’: New Canaan Firefighters Honor NCHS Student Jack Major

Though many residents may only associate firefighters with sirens and smoke during major crises, the work that takes place behind the scenes—such as cleaning, maintenance and housekeeping—is absolutely essential, officials say. For the past year, New Canaan High School junior Jack Major has contributed to this vital aspect of the New Canaan Fire Department’s operation. “He helps us clean up, takes care of weeds, wipes down the trucks,” Fire Capt. Mike Socci said of the teen. Socci and more than one dozen fire and school officials joined family and friends at the firehouse on Main Street on Wednesday for a celebratory lunch in honor ofMajor’s contributions. Socci and Fire Chief Jack Hennessey presented Major with a monogrammed plaque recognizing his enthusiasm and dedication to the job.

‘One of My Best Ventures Yet’: Chef Prasad Returns With ‘India’

Since the closing of Thali last November, Chef Prasad Chirnomula has fielded the same question from loyal fans countless times…“When will you be back?”

The answer to that question can finally be announced with certainty. Following a six-week renovation of the space at 62 Main Street that formerly housed Boulevard 18—right down the street from his old restaurant—Chirnomula is ready to open the doors of his newest venture ‘India’ on Monday, April 4. “I’m super-excited,” Chirnomula told NewCanaanite.com at a special preview party for the restaurant on Sunday. “I love New Canaan. I’ve been here so long and everybody’s knocking on the door, asking ‘when are you opening?’ We did a good job—in six weeks we turned the place around.

‘Whatever You Wanted, We Had It’: A Look Back at Breslow’s

In this day and age of specialty superstores and chains, it’s often difficult to imagine the variety store of yesteryear—quaint one-stop shops replete with pretty much everything and anything you’d need to get through the day. Such stores were common throughout suburbia for most of the 20th century, serving a specific need and purpose in a simpler time. And here in New Canaan, no one served that need and purpose better than Breslow’s. Founded in the 1930’s by brothers Ben and Mike, Breslow’s was a New Canaan fixture for nearly half a century, occupying the site of the town’s third firehouse, which—according to the New Canaan Historical Society—had stood at 32 Elm St. (Papyrus currently occupies the space) since 1892.
