Though many residents may only associate firefighters with sirens and smoke during major crises, the work that takes place behind the scenes—such as cleaning, maintenance and housekeeping—is absolutely essential, officials say.

For the past year, New Canaan High School junior Jack Major has contributed to this vital aspect of the New Canaan Fire Department’s operation.
“He helps us clean up, takes care of weeds, wipes down the trucks,” Fire Capt. Mike Socci said of the teen.
Socci and more than one dozen fire and school officials joined family and friends at the firehouse on Main Street on Wednesday for a celebratory lunch in honor ofMajor’s contributions. Socci and Fire Chief Jack Hennessey presented Major with a monogrammed plaque recognizing his enthusiasm and dedication to the job.
“We had to give him something for giving us his time,” Socci told NewCanaanite.com. “We’re letting him know how much he is appreciated.”
Held onMajor’s final day with the fire department in its common room downstairs, the lunch included burgers, pasta salad, chips and soda.
Major came to the Fire Department this year as part of a NCHS program that allows special needs students to volunteer at civic organizations. It runs separately and alongside the hugely popular Senior Internship Program.
Socci said he sees the program as invaluable.
Major’s co-workers, friends, family, and other Fire Department interns sit down for a BBQ-style lunch.
“It’s great to get them experience in the real world,” Socci said. “Since we’ve started with the volunteers, we’ve always thought it was a great thing. It’s unbelievable how they can excel.”
Socci added that he wants interns such as Major “to be asking the questions.”
“He’s the one who has to do the work,” Socci said. “We don’t want him relying on his aide.”
Members of the fire department said they hope that Major can continue to volunteer his service and that he is always welcome back.
“We’re definitely a part of his life now,” Socci said.
