Here are 28 Current New Canaan Chamber Member Businesses That Also Belonged in Back in ’82

Here’s a short list of sweeping economic crises that have affected, directly or indirectly, every U.S. business since 1982: Black Monday, savings and loan crisis, subprime mortgage crisis and Great Recession. Locally, success in business involves nimbleness and acumen, and far more than that—interpersonal skills, involvement, diligence and imagination. Recently, the head of an organization that’s central for many local businesses, the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce, came by chance across a list of 28 current members that also were members back in 1982. “They’ve supported the chamber, supported the town and been here for a long, long time,” Executive Director Tucker Murphy said. “We want to congratulate them on that.”

Here’s the list, in alphabetical order (not every single business has been a continuous member of the chamber, though many—including Bob’s Sports, Karl Chevrolet, Walter Stewart’s and Stewart’s Spirits—have been):

Ann Taylor
Baskin Robbins
Bob’s Sports
Brotherhood & Higley

Ties to the local chamber run very deep for businesses such as Walter Stewart’s, recently recognized as Business of the Year.

New Canaan Taps Social Media, Selfies to Celebrate and Encourage Family Togetherness

Here’s some data that Kate Boyle and Jacqui D’Louhy had in mind when they thought of ways New Canaan could mark April as Alcohol Awareness Month: Families that have dinner together five to seven times per week are 33 percent less likely to abuse alcohol or drugs. Family time lowers the risk of mental health problems, substance abuse and eating disorders, said D’Louhy, youth and family services coordinator at the New Canaan Department of Human Services. Boyle works there as youth and family services specialist. So this month, the pair are launching a campaign that’s designed to document, share and celebrate family togetherness. During “30 Days of Family,” residents are encouraged to snap photos of what they’re doing with loved ones, and then to share them with the community through Boyle (details on how to do that below).

New Canaan Tradition: Fishing Derby at Mill Pond Set for April 12

Town officials have set the date for a cherished community event at Mill Pond whose roots go back nearly 50 years in New Canaan. Derby Day—listed on the town’s website as the George Cogswell Memorial Fishing Derby 2014, named for a former New Canaan police officer—will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 12 (registration opens at 8:30 a.m.), according to a press release issued by New Canaan Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tucker Murphy. The pond, which New Canaan has dredged every other year, will be stocked ahead of the event with 370 pounds of rainbow trout, Murphy said. The dredging of Mill Pond came up recently, at a March 19 Town Council meeting, during a presentation from Department of Public Works Director Michael Pastore and Assistant Director Tiger Mann. According to Mann, Mill and Mead Ponds (neither of which were skate-able this past winter) are dredged every other year at a cost of about $10,000 each time.

VIDEO: Happy St. Patrick’s Day from the Kiwanis Club of New Canaan

Read their lips: Happy St. Patrick’s Day. Dropping in on the New Canaan Kiwanis Club’s popular St. Patrick’s Day dinner, we asked organizers and guests to look at the camera and wish a happy holiday to fellow New Canaanites—and warned them that they’d have to mouth the words or otherwise gesticulate, since the volume on their cutaways would be muted. We think they did pretty well—take a look (and thanks, everyone, for being such good sports):

A family-friendly event as promised, the dinner drew more than 100 guests—mostly local families—to St.

Gearing Up for the New Canaan Kiwanis Club’s Annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner

The New Canaan Kiwanis Club’s popular St. Patrick’s Day dinner is around the corner, scheduled for 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 16 in the St. Aloysius School’s dining hall. When we heard it was coming, NewCanaanite.com caught up with club member Susan Serven for a quick chat about the event. A community staple for years, the event features Irish dancing (photo at right from the 2013 event), and is sponsored by New Canaan’s Hoyt Funeral Home, Harrigan’s Insurance (great-looking Labrador retriever pictured on their homepage), Nurenu Marketing, Baskin-Robbins and New Canaan Chamber of Commerce.
