The first day of school in New Canaan, Thursday, Aug. 27, is less than two weeks away, and if parents haven’t got kids’ school supplies yet, the time is now.
New Canaan Public Schools has published lists of school supplies to buy for students in each elementary schools (but not Saxe Middle School or the high school) on this Web page, or you can go directly to the lists (in PDF format) here:
Connecticut Tax-Free Week starts on Sunday and means you won’t be paying the state sales tax on most items of clothing priced (or sale priced) at less than $100. The state won’t charge for taxes through the week (ending Saturday, Aug. 22).
There are certain rules about tax-free buying that you may want to be aware of (for instance, athletic shoes used only for athletics — think soccer cleats — still have a tax on them). For details, see this Web page on the state Department of Revenue Services website.
New Canaan High School juniors and seniors who want to drive cars to school have certain hurdles to jump over, hoops to shoot through and red tape to unstick. Here are some of them, according to this Web page on the high school website:
Parking passes will be available to seniors and juniors for one vehicle only. Members of the Class of 2016 and 2017 may stop by the Attendance Office beginning on [Thursday] Aug. 20, 2015 to submit parking applications.
Because there is limited parking only those juniors who meet the following conditions will be eligible for a sticker: 1) possess a valid driver’s license and 2) have after school obligations or special circumstances that require them to drive to school.
To obtain a parking sticker, the student must submit a letter from an employer or coach explaining his/her situation, as junior parking passes will be provided based on availability and need.
The parking fee this year is $40. Checks should be made payable to NCHS. No student will be issued a parking sticker until any outstanding fees and/or fines have been resolved. Please do not bring cash. […] Forms are available on line and in the attendance office.
