Update 9:50 p.m.

Calling today’s turnout by local Republicans “a disappointment,” New Canaan Registrar of Voters Kathleen Redman released the following unofficial results of Tuesday’s primaries. A total of 796 GOP members voted—that’s about 12.4 percent of registered Republicans in town.

“While we always strive for 100 percent participation, we fell far short of that goal,” Redman said in an email.

Turnout is low among New Canaan Republicans voting in a thin primary for mostly non-local offices, GOP officials said early Tuesday afternoon.

Exactly 231 votes had been cast in person at Saxe and the high school as of noon, and another 68 absentee ballots had been returned (out of 74 issued), officials said.

“I think a lot of people are out of town and there’s really only one contest that is local to all of us and that’s in District Three,” which has just 994 registered Republicans in town, said Kathleen Redman, Republican Registrar of Voters in New Canaan.

“It’s hard to see what’s really going on, but I would say that they [local Republicans] are really not as engaged,” Redman said.

Seeking the GOP nomination in the District Three race, for state Rep. Lawrence F. Cafero Jr.’s seat (R-142, representing parts of New Canaan and Norwalk), are Emily Wilson and Fred Wilms.

The other GOP contenders are seeking state offices: governor—Thomas Foley and John McKinney; lieutenant governor—Penny Bacchiochi, Heather Somers and David Walker; comptroller—Sharon McLaughlin and Angel Cadena.
