It was a muggy afternoon at Saxe as New Canaan Boys White 07 delivered its first victory of the season over Greenwich Milan 07.

The boys started off on a strong note with a goal early on by Jack Mitchell but Greenwich answered back, tying the score at 1-1, toward the end of the first half.

New Canaan only gained momentum as the game progressed. Even in the span of time from the first to second half, they improved substantially as a team, passing and staying on top of the ball.

The defensive line stayed strong and Christian Crovatto in goal stopped everything that came his way. It was only a matter of time until New Canaan scored again with Gianmarco Barrato firing a shot at the top right-hand corner, which proved to be unstoppable by Greenwich. And with the boys on the offensive for most of the remainder of the game, Greenwich was unable to come back.

New Canaan’s U-11 Girls White Team posted its first win in a 5-3 victory over Westport on Sunday at Saxe.

New Canaan dominated play from the opening whistle, refusing to let Westport have possession and creating multiple opportunities early on. At the 15-minute mark, Lily Magliacano found Ella McDonnell on the far side of the goal for New Canaan’s first score.

Ten minutes later Lindsay Zaffino intercepted a Westport pass and beat the goalie one on one to make the score 2-0. Sloane Griffiths, Anne Gilliam and Lily Bradley continued to pressure Westport with repeated attacks from the midfield, until finally Magliacano found the back of the net herself thirty minutes in.

Westport was able to shift momentum at the end of the first half, notching a goal. Solid defense by Logan Severance, Sofia Brauweiler and Campbell McGurk stopped the Westport counter attack to end the first half up 3-1.

Westport opened the second half with an early goal to tighten the score to 3-2, but then Magliacano responded right away with another goal, and then an assist – once again connecting with McDonnell to make it 5-2.

Danielle O’Malley and Sarah Marshall made a noticeable impact in the second half, controlling possession and creating multiple chances to score.

Westport fought hard and managing another goal midway through the second half, but New Canaan controlled the end of the game by staying organized and challenging Westport on every play.

—submitted by John Dunn

The New Canaan Red U12 Girls squared up against one of their toughest division rivals, Wilton Blue this past Sunday at Saxe.

Minutes later, Tully kept the pressure on and threaded a beautiful pass to Tessa Cosco who converted for a 2-0 lead. As Caroline Underwood controlled the middle, strikers Julia Dunn, Kelly Polacek and Stella Nolan all just missed scoring as the bewildered Wilton squad were fortunate to be down only 2 at the half.

It turned into a tale of two halves as Wilton opened the second half on fire and took the play to the New Canaan team. Under intense pressure defender Kate Caione was all over the field keeping the Wilton team at bay. As the game wore on the steady play of Nola Kammerer with strong support from Evelyn Slatoff and Peyton Zaletsky helped keep Wilton off the board with the game ending in a 2-0 shutout.

New Canaan U12 Girls Black Defeat Westport 1-0

—submitted by Mike Mottolese

So far so good – that’s what the U12 Black girls are feeling right now with their second league win in as many weeks, to go to 2-0 on the season. The girls faced off against Westport Sunday afternoon on the Water tower Turf Field in New Canaan.

Although the score at the end of the first half remained 0-0, it didn’t reflect how New Canaan dominated the half, keeping the ball in Westport’s end of the field the entire half. Westport was not able to mount much of an attack, but goalkeeper Emily Fox handled anything that came her way. New Canaan forwards Ava Dunn, Alex Gelvin, Abby Richardson and Jocelyn Riley, helped provide the pressure with early shots on goal by Reagan Quinn and Abby Richardson.

Fresh subs Delaney Hoey, Rory McCarthy, Kelley Marchiony, Peyton Franz, Paxton Beladino and Charlotte Walter arrived halfway through the half and picked up the offensive pressure. Hoey, McCarthy, Franz and Marchiony all having shots stopped by good goalkeeping by Westport. Midfielders KK Mottolese and Reagan Bailey, and Lauryn Lee swept the ball out of their zone and fed the forwards to help set up the shots on goal. Natalie Plosker and Amanda Benson provided rock solid defense from the fullback positions expelling anything that came into New Canaan’s zone.

It was more of the same in the second half, with New Canaan spending all of their time near Westport’s goal. New Canaan was looking for a goal to prove that they deserved to win this game that they had controlled from the start. The opposing keeper continued to keep New Canaan off the board as Riley, Dunn and Gelvin tried to find the back of the net. Hoey and McCarthy pounded the goalie as well, and Richardson had a goal waved off due to a handball call near the Westport goal. Bailey and Lee and Quinn continued their fine passing, constantly advancing the ball up the edges seamlessly. Finally, late in the half, Mottolese controlled the ball, keeping it in Westport’s half and advanced it to Walter, who crossed to Abby Richardson for the score. Scoring chances all game came as a result of good ball movement from the team. Benson and Plosker and Fox remained steady, squelching any runs that Westport made into their zone to hold the game to a 1-0 final.
