Police on Saturday morning charged a New Canaan woman, 36, with third-degree strangulation following a domestic incident at her home.

At about 6:26 a.m. on Aug. 3, New Canaan Police took a complaint about the dispute between two occupants of a residence on Jelliff Mill Road, officials said.

The dispute had occurred there earlier in the morning, according to a police report.

Following an investigation, police charged the woman with strangulation as well as disorderly conduct and third-degree assault.

It isn’t clear what the dispute involved, who the victim was, whether he or she is related to the arrest woman or what was the extent of the victim’s injuries. Police withheld further information, classifying the incident as a domestic matter.

Under state law, a person is guilty of third-degree strangulation—a misdemeanor—if he or she “recklessly restrains another person by the neck or throat or obstructs such other person’s nose or mouth and impedes the ability of such other person to breathe or restricts blood circulation of such other person.”

The woman was released after promising to appear Monday in state Superior Court in Norwalk.

According to Connecticut Judicial Branch records, she has been arrested by New Canaan and Norwalk Police in the past for third-degree assault and disorderly conduct (March 2018), numerous drug charges including a felony-level offense (October 2017), motor vehicle charges (July 2017) and evading (July 2017).
