New Canaan police are putting residents to high alert after a multi-person scam led to a burglary Friday afternoon at an elderly resident’s home.

According to a press release issued by Police Chief Leon Krolikowski, some time after 2p.m. a man described as in his 30s, white or possibly Hispanic and wearing a long white T-shirt or plaid shirt, lured the homeowner outside her home off of South Avenue near the Merritt Parkway.

The suspect did so under the guise of doing tree work and, while the resident was outside, someone else—or multiple people—entered the house, forced their way into a locked area and stole items from within, Krolikowski said.

The woman discovered what had happened after she went back inside and notified police at about 3 p.m., the chief said. No vehicle or more detailed descriptions of the suspect were immediately available, and it isn’t clear just what was stolen.

“Report all suspicious persons or vehicles; do not trust any unsolicited workers on your property,’ the chief said. “Call NCPD at 203-594-3500 or 911 with information or to report suspicious activity. Lock your doors/windows, secure your valuables, and activate your alarm even when at home. Be safe and be aware.”
