Public safety officials in New Canaan are urging residents to ensure that their house numbers are clearly marked on streets and mailboxes so that emergency responders do not lose precious time.
Street numbers should be clearly posted on a mailbox—preferably four inches high—and those with shared driveways must post directional signs for police, fire and paramedics, said Fred Baker, New Canaan’s fire marshal.
“Precious time is lost every day when Public Safety Personnel try to locate an address and all they see are blank mailboxes staring back at them,” Baker said in a written release. “If there is a number on the box and/or house then their job is much easier and you get the help you need much faster.”
Anyone with questions about whether their home is adequately signed or how to mark it so that first responders lose no time in case of an emergency should call Baker at 203-594-3030.
