Ellery Baran scored two goals and sophomore Meghan Mitchell scored once to lead the No. 7 New Canaan High School Field Hockey team to its second consecutive Class M title with a 3-1 win over fourth-ranked Guilford Saturday afternoon at Wethersfield High School.
The Rams took a 1-0 lead on Mitchell’s goal, and extended to a 2-0 advantage when Baran, a senior co-captain scored off a pass from junior Lauren Sturm on a penalty corner. Baran made it 3-0 after another penalty corner with junior Sierra Smith getting the assist, before the Indians cut the New Canaan lead to 3-1 just before halftime.
It was all defense in the second half as neither team was able to score. New Canaan goalie Emily Gaeta was superb, stopping six Guilford shots en route to the victory.
The title was the first for New Canaan’s head coach Alyssa Havens, who stepped in for former coach Erin Gildea just as the season began. It was New Canaan’s fifth state crown in school history.
