Police on Wednesday arrested a 45-year-old Norwalk man who tried to pick up a child from St. Aloysius School while intoxicated.

At about 2:50 p.m. on Jan. 11, officers were dispatched to the school’s parking lot on a report that a parent was trying to pick up a child and might be drunk, police said.

Arriving, officers saw the man backing out of a parking space with a juvenile in the car who was not properly secured in a child restraint system, according to a police report.

Police spotted several pieces of cut wood in the back seat near the child as well as a bottle of liquor in the center console, the report said.

On speaking to the man, police smelled alcohol on his breath, it said.

The man failed field sobriety tests and refused to undergo a breath test, according to police.

He was charged with risk of injury to children, a felony offense, as well as driving under the influence.

Police released the man on $5,000 bond and scheduled him to appear Friday in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
