The Summer Theatre of New Canaan’s season is in full swing! Watch as the tent goes up in Waveny Park to the tune of West Side Story, which is coming in July! For more information and to buy tickets now, visit www.stonc.org
Check out the Summer Theatre of New Canaan’s time-lapse video of setting up their tent at Waveny, just beyond the NCHS parking lot. Come July 6, “West Side Story” and other popular musicals will be performed under the tent.

Plenty of action recently for the Animal Control section of the New Canaan Police Department:
- A bobcat sighting off of Smith Ridge Road, just south of Grace Farms, was reported at 1:32 p.m. on May 21.
- A 4-year-old beagle on St. George Lane is under a 14-day home quarantine after biting its owner in the face when she went to kiss the sleeping dog. That happened on May 19.
- A 2-year-old golden doodle on Oenoke Ridge Road on May 7 bit a child in the hand after the kid pounced on the dog from behind.
- A Deep Valley Road dog owner has been fined $184 this week—$92 for each count of allowing a dog to roam, after a border collie and Australian shepherd (not for the first time) breached both invisible and physical fences at home, and turned up on Soundview Lane.
- Henry the rooster has been adopted out of the NCPD animal shelter. He’ll be driven this weekend to SquirrelWood, an equine sanctuary in Montgomery, N.Y.

Did you hear that there are now salads and sandwiches on offer at Kaahve, the new coffee shop that opened some weeks ago at Main and East Avenue? Quinoa and Chicken Caesar Salads and Caprese, Vegetable Panini and Turkey Sandwiches (with apple and cheddar on a baguette) now round out its full complement of Turkish coffee and hot drinks. Kaahve also is soon to launch a loyalty program.

NCPD is cracking down on seat belt enforcement as part of a statewide “Click It or Ticket” campaign, which runs through June 5.

Nicky Dubiago recently celebrated 20 years of service working for CVS in New Canaan. Dubiago, a New Canaan resident, was feted with a cake and special presentation from the store manager, Michael DePascale. Nicky is a client of STAR, an organization that serves individuals with developmental disabilities .

Congratulations to the St. Aloysius School Boys and Girls Cross Country Team for an outstanding finish to their Spring 2016 Season at the Championship meet on Tuesday, May 17, at Penfield Beach in Fairfield. Ribbon winners include: Jack Farrar: 3rd place overall for 8th grade boys; Riley Stenger: 3rd place overall for 6th grade girls; Sam Farrar: 5th place (tie) for 5th grade girls; Annalise Wolters (not pictured): 5th place (tie) for 5th grade girls; Teddy Klein: 2nd place overall for 6th grade boys; Lily Koerner: 4th place overall for 6th grade girls; Katie Mahoney: 3rd place overall for 8th grade girls AND the 8th grade girls WINNER of the Championship race.

L-R, ACT 2 cast: Nick Ranieri, Lucy Coutts, Wyatt Lysenko, Kate Callahan, Audrey Kirkpatrick, Joseph Turner, Allison Demers, Will Dooley. "A Day in Hollywood, A Night in the Ukraine" is a musical comedy consisting of two acts. Act 1 is "A Day in Hollywood" and features songs, sketches, and dance numbers all performed by a chorus of ushers and usherettes at Gruman's Chinese Theater back in the 1930s. Act 2 is "A Night in the Ukraine", which features a pastiche of Marx brothers comedies. The show is on Friday June 3 at 7pm and Saturday June 4th at 2pm & 7pm. On May 11, 27 members of the New Canaan Beautification League gathered together at the home of Libby Butterworth. Armed with trowels, wire cutters and the spirit of camaraderie, they assembled the 207 hanging baskets now adorning lampposts throughout downtown New Canaan.This year’s baskets contain pink dragon-wing begonias, white petunias and a new variety this year, the petchoa. The petchoa is a hybrid cross between a petunia and a calibrachoa and exhibits the best features of both flowers. After all the baskets were planted under the guidance of NCBL co-chairs Libby Butterworth, Sara Hunt and Eileen Boehme, men from the Department of Public Works picked them up in town trucks and hung them on lampposts the following day. These men included Walt Jaykus, Jimmy Peck, John Mitchell and Highway Superintendent Mose Saccary. As part of the collaborative project, town employees will water the baskets three times a week throughout the summer.

Stephanie Benko has been named as Lafayette College’s best scholar-athlete. An All-Patriot League First-Team selection in outdoor track and field in 2016 after winning the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Benko—a NCHS graduate and daughter of New Canaan’s Sue and Steve Benko—also placed fifth in the 5,000 meters at the same event. It was Benko's second Patriot League title in the steeplechase after winning the event in 2014 and finishing as the runner up in 2013. She holds the school record of 10:33.79 set in 2014. A two-year team captain for cross country and track & field, Benko was named Lafayette's Female Maroon Club Scholar-Athlete of the Year this past fall. She maintains a 3.65 grade-point average while majoring in Biology and minoring in Spanish. Earlier this week, she was selected to the Academic All-Patriot League Outdoor Track & Field Team. In her time on College Hill, Benko has served as the chair of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the President of the Delta Gamma Fraternity and as the vice president of fundraising for the Lafayette chapter of Colleges Against Cancer.
