New Canaan Police said Wednesday that the department has fielded just two calls related to youth parties in 2018, down from nine in 2017. During a regular meeting of the Police Commission, Chief Leon Krolikowski also shared data that family dispute calls declined year-over-year from 62 to 54, and narcotics violations calls declined from 66 to 48, while fraud calls increased from 53 to 94 and identity theft increased from 25 to 55.

The town on Jan. 10 issued a building permit for the widely anticipated fifth platform tennis court at Waveny. More than one-third of the estimated $100,000 cost is to be paid for by private contributions raised among users of the facility. The approximately 30-by-60-foot platform tennis court will be built adjacent to existing ones and to the north (toward the parking lot).

Animal Control fined the owner of a 2-year-old Labrador retriever on Parish Road $92 for allowing a dog to roam after the animal got off-property on New Year’s Eve and then ended up fighting with a neighbor’s canine while loose. Both dogs were licensed, according to Officer Allyson Halm, head of NCPD’s Animal Control section.

A friendly reminder that the Interfaith Council of New Canaan will hold the 17th annual, town-wide Service of Remembrance to honor the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church. The Rev. George B. Walker will give the keynote address. A graduate of Morehouse College, the Divinity School of Duke University and the Executive Coaching Certificate Program of the Georgetown University School of Continuing Education, he is a Life Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

The Board of Finance at its regular meeting Tuesday unanimously re-elected Todd Lavieri as chairman and Judy Neville as secretary. The Police Commission on Wednesday unanimously re-elected Sperry DeCew as chairman and Jim McLaughlin as secretary.

Eversource is expected to hook up East School with natural gas next week, First Selectman Kevin Moynihan said during Tuesday’s finance board meeting.

Police at about 9:34 p.m. Tuesday cited a 29-year-old Stamford man for possession of less than .5 ounces of marijuana after stopping him on Ponus Ridge for driving with a defective brake light. He also was cited for failure to maintain property insurance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Firefighters were called to a chimney fire at 26 Marshall Ridge Road at about 11:38 p.m. Tuesday. The fire was contained to the chimney itself and no foul play is suspected, officials said.

The newly formed Tourism and Economic Development Advisory Committee will hold its inaugural meeting Jan. 31, Moynihan said.

HomeFront presented its Community Cornerstone Award to the Exchange Club of New Canaan during a recent meeting held at Woodway Country Club. The award is in recognition of a noteworthy milestone: The Exchange Club reached its 25th year of fixing up homes with HomeFront for low-income families in New Canaan and surrounding towns. In presenting the award, HomeFront’s Executive Director, Sean O’Brien, said, “In the face of man-made, natural and economic disasters over these past 25 years, the Exchange Club has remained a dedicated friend to local struggling families. That is deserving of our highest praise and we realize that this is just one of many ways in which The Exchange Club makes our communities better places to live.”

Six trees decorated by the New Canaan Garden Club for the annual Holiday Stroll held in downtown New Canaan were then donated to New Canaan’s Department of Human Services for local families who otherwise would not have a tree for the holiday season. This year 6 trees were donated by the club. In addition, New Canaan Garden Club members recently donated $2,800 to the Human Services for the town’s Food Pantry and Warm Up Fund.
