Motor vehicle accidents in New Canaan are down 6 percent year-over-year, the police chief reported Wednesday night, while drunk-driving arrests are down to 27 year-to-date in 2017, from 42 at the same time last year. Larcenies from vehicles are up, from 32 at this time last year to 42 in 2017, Chief Leon Krolikowski reported to members of the Police Commission, while stolen vehicles have increased from six to 13, and youth parties have doubled year-to-date, from four to eight.

Bankwell recently completed a holiday gift and toy drive in support of Kids Helping Kids. The drive provided underserved children with the opportunity to “shop” for gifts for their family at a special holiday event hosted by Kids Helping Kids in early December. The mission of Kids Helping Kids is to develop leadership skills through youth-led service projects that benefit low-income children in local communities.

Born Oct. 8 to Bryan and Emy Urena, baby Naella Urena recently was diagnosed as having a hole in her heart. Many locals will know Bryan as a waiter for three-plus years at Baldanza Café on Elm Street. Help is needed to keep up with her ongoing medical costs. The New Canaan Police Union is hosting a toy, coat and food drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 23 at the New Canaan Playhouse, 89 Elm St. All collected items will be distributed through the Human Services Department at Vine Cottage for those in the community in need.

The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday voted 3-0 to hire Nicholas Pia as a laborer at the Transfer Station. The selectmen also voted unanimously to hire Pam Haas as a part-time employee in the Town Clerk’s office.

The Meals on Wheels of New Canaan board is sending a big ‘Thank You’ to Dave Wilk and everyone at Coldwell Banker’s New Canaan office for their generous donation of $2,200 to Meals on Wheels of New Canaan. Coldwell Banker matched funds donated by their office and selected three non-profits to offer a contribution. “Meals on Wheels of New Canaan is very thankful to receive this donation,” board member Stephanie Radman said on behalf of the organization.

The Bojanglers, a singing group made up of local volunteers who bring a lot of joy to residents of senior centers and shelters in our area, recently brought the gift of song to the Winter Wonderland at the New Canaan Nature Center. Over the last 8 years, the group has grown and the number of events has expanded to more than 30 per year.
