The Town Council on Wednesday approved $138.3 million in spending for next fiscal year, a 4.7 percent increase over current spending.

The final figure—$138,303,112—represents about $100,000 less than what the Board of Finance has passed along to the council in this budget season.

Board of Education members during the council’s meeting at the New Canaan Nature Center’s Visitors Center once again made a case for not reducing further the district’s spending request for next year.

Minor reductions were made in some areas, such as the police department’s overtime budget, though that department also is getting two additional officers as per its own budget request, one of whom will service as a school resource officer at Saxe Middle School.

Council members Roger Williams and John Emert did not vote in favor of the final spending figure.
