A pair of serial escapee dogs from Deep Valley Road on Sept. 13 were found roaming on St. Luke’s School property, where the Animal Control section of the New Canaan Police Department picked up and later impounded the border collie and Australian shepherd. Their owner was fined a total of $334, for two counts each of allowing a dog to roam and failure to license. ***

Thefts from vehicles in New Canaan were up 60 percent year-over-year in August—from 15 to 24—according to NCPD Chief Leon Krolikowski.

Hundreds Gather Downtown for Overdose Awareness Vigil

More than 400-plus people gathered at the Pop Up Park downtown Thursday night to honor those who have died from accidental drug overdoses as well as those struggling with addiction. Those attending the New Canaan Parent Support Group and New Canaan Community Foundation’s vigil on National Overdose Awareness Day heard emotional, heartfelt stories shared by four individuals—two from those in recovery from addiction and two from parents who had a child succumb to the disease. One of those parents was Paul Reinhardt, founder of the New Canaan Parent Support Group, whose son Evan, a graduate of New Canaan High School in 2009, passed away due to a drug overdose in July 2015. “Evan was a true jokester,” Reinhardt told the crowd on a clear, cool night. “He was always out to have fun and amuse those around him to make them happy—always thinking about the other guy.

Op-Ed: Giving with a Soft Heart and Hard Head

My heart goes out to all of the Texans battling Hurricane Harvey and its vicious aftermath. It has been so moving to see the images of bravery and generosity. When the waters are rising fast, there is no age, no race, and no gender. From the Cajun Navy to Marines volunteering for the Xena Project to bring in stranded horses from neighboring ranches, this is America at its very best. From a distance, I want to be able to help so badly, but I want to use my head as well as my heart to be as effective and efficient as possible.

I’ve been heartened with the community interest to-date in next week’s candelight vigil. In recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day, local residents, community leaders, faith groups, and individuals and families facing addiction and living in recovery are coming together on August 31st at 7:00 pm at the Pop-Up Park. I hope anyone interested will join us. I’m writing not just as a town resident, but as President & CEO of the New Canaan Community Foundation. For 40 years, we’ve been the local charitable partner for people who want to connect and give locally, on a wide variety of issues that our residents care about.

A mother turkey hopped out into Valley Road around 12:30 p.m. on June 7 to keep at bay a town woman walking her dog up near the Grupes Reservoir. The mama turkey apparently was guarding her three baby chicks nearby—unfortunately, a passing motorist struck the big bird and killed her. The pedestrian phoned the Animal Control section of the New Canaan Police Department, and Officer Allyson Halm spotted the baby turkeys but lost them on retrieving a carrier from the van. ***

Congratulations to New Canaan resident Pasquale Poccia, who became a U.S. citizen this week after taking the Oath of Allegiance on Wednesday during the 6th annual Flag Day Naturalization Ceremony at Mystic Seaport. Poccia is owner of Pasquale’s Osteria, an Italian and International/Continental cuisine restaurant on Main Street in Norwalk.
