Dunn Breaks Scoreless Halftime Tie for U11 Girls White Team

On a day that felt more like late November than the middle of May, the New Canaan U11 Girls White team took the field against the Fairfield USA White team at Farm Road. The first half was evenly played between the two teams, with New Canaan having a slight advantage keeping offensive pressure in Fairfield’s zone. Forwards Jocelyn Riley, Peyton Franz and Kelly Marchiony had few scoring chances but were fed the ball by the strong feet of defenders Natalie Plosker and Amanda Benson. Goalkeeper KK Mottolese kept Fairfield off the board and ably covered the ball, and cleared to her teammates efficiently. After back and forth play between the two teams, the first half ended knotted at zero.

Mother’s Day dawned dreary and damp, leaving many a mother fretting about field conditions and frizzy hair. Luckily, Mother Nature got the message loud and clear as some splashes of sun finally broke through the clouds at kickoff. The New Canaan FC U9 Girls Red team took to the pitch with barely contained excitement but tempered with a touch of concern upon reflection of earlier bouts with the strong Monroe team. True to form, the Panthers scored within the first minute of play spawning fits of nervous chatter among the assembled matriarchal glitterati of the Big Red Wrecking Ball. Undaunted, the NC Red girls quickly jumped back on the offensive and evened the score in the 4th minute as Sydney Patten blasted a shot off the far left post on a beautiful cross from Madeline “Maddie” Tully.

New Canaan U9 Girls ‘Big Red Wrecking Ball’ Swings Again (this write-up from Jon Gizzie)

Every once in a while, a sporting match comes along that transcends the mere semblance of a strong competition and elevates itself into a hallowed place in the collectively memories of players, parents and coaches. Such was the exhibition put on by New Canaan’s U9G ‘Big Red Wrecking Ball’ this past Sunday. It is not enough to describe the back-and-forth of play after play in exhaustive prose for to do so would diminish the spectacle of witnessing an entire team come together, all working in unison, all driving themselves toward collective achievement and the chance to snatch victory back from possible defeat. It is not enough to describe the focused strength of Payton DeCamillo, the explosive offense of Nikki “Ferrari” Ferraro, the unshakeable poise of Lila Gizzie, the fortress defense of Parker Hanson, the indomitable focus of Madison Hartnett, the lightning speed of Julia McPhillips, the sinuous footwork of Sydney Patten, the confident control of Cecilia Patterson, the energetic attack of Kallie Patterson, the unstoppable tenacity of Paige Place, the precise passing of Reese Quinn or the surgical striking of Madeline Tully when, taken together, the synergistic dynamism of this team becomes a wonder to watch and a terror for any team to face. Newtown learned firsthand what it meant to come to the ‘House of Wrecking’ and throw down the gauntlet of challenge.
