Oh, There’s No Place Like New Canaan for the Holidays

It’s the holiday season, and there is no other place than New Canaan for celebrating. From the Holiday Stroll in early December, to the Exchange Club’s Christmas tree sale at Kiwanis Park, to the lights on the trees and lampposts in town reminding us all of the beauty town has during this time of year, and culminating with the caroling on Christmas Eve. Each opportunity gives New Canaanites a chance to experience the romance of this town, as well as that feeling like there’s no place like home for the holidays. New York City is just an hour train ride away, and one could argue that its ambiance this time of year is unrivaled. If you have the time to plan a trip with family or friends, this is the best time of year to do so.

‘Tis the Season to Jam It All In

My mother rarely left New Canaan in December, and I couldn’t understand it. While we five kids were at school, my dad was at work, and I thought she was home all day smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee. Now I get it. It’s the same bewilderment my husband feels when he wonders what I do all day as a mom and freelancer. I tell him I have my feet up and eat Bon Bons, and that perhaps I shouldn’t do all I do for one whole week and then he would really notice what gets accomplished around the house.

New Canaan Fire Marshal’s Safe Ash Disposal Tips

Embers can remain active in ashes for up to five days after a fire dies down, and even then should only be removed into a metal container with tight lid for safe disposal, New Canaan fire safety officials say. Connecticut already saw one fire caused by improper disposal of fireplaces ashes, and this “happened when ashes from a woodstove were placed outside, adjacent to the foundation of the home which ignited the homes siding,” New Canaan Fire Marshal Fred Baker said. “The good news is, the family was alerted by a smoke detector and they made a safe escape,” Baker said. “However, their home suffered moderate fire damage and may be uninhabitable for some time.”

From the New Canaan Police Chief’s Desk: Beware Phony Veterans Organizations This Holiday Season

By Leon Krolikowski, Chief of Police

From the days of the Revolutionary War through the two World Wars of the 20th century to the regional conflicts of the 21st century as well as the ongoing War on Terror, our Veterans have stood on the front lines to preserve the freedoms that we cherish. As a result, every Veteran deserves our gratitude. On Nov. 11, Veterans Day, we honor those who pledged to protect and serve our great country-our Veterans. Veterans Day honors the service and sacrifice of those who have served in the U.S. Military.

New Canaan Fire Marshal Urges Safe Use of Candles during Holidays

New Canaan’s fire safety officials are urging town residents to keep combustible decorations—such as evergreen trees—at least 12 inches away from candles in this holiday season. Though creating a “warm, welcoming feel” often involves use of candles in the home, it’s critical to keep safety top of mind, according to a bulletin posted Monday by Fire Marshal Fred Baker. “If [candles are] not used safely, the most festive occasions can quickly be ruined,” Baker said. Here’s another important reminder: “Make sure candles are out of reach of children and pets.”

What follows are Baker’s fire safety tips regarding candles:

Always place candles on/in noncombustible bases. Ensure there is nothing directly over candles.
