Connecticut Department of Transportation officials have agreed to pave Route 106—a state road—between the Merritt Parkway and South Avenue, addressing a stretch of road that New Canaan’s highest elected official ranks among our very worst.
The work will start Monday Sept. 15 and wrap up within about four or five days, First Selectman Rob Mallozzi said, citing information from the state.
“This is certainly a road that we have flagged to the Department of Transportation in the last number of years, as one in serious need of attention,” Mallozzi said.
The news comes as the town re-paves its own roads and works, as it does each summer, on crack-sealing newer roads to help them live longer. The town spends about $100,000 each year crack-sealing 15 to 30 roads, according to Department of Public Works Assistant Director Tiger Mann.
“It’s probably the most important thing we do for the longevity of the road,” Mann said. “It keeps the water out of the base and stops it from freezing.”
Examples of roadways in New Canaan that have been crack-sealed this summer include Laurel Road.
