Police say a 57-year-old Stamford woman is in stable condition at Norwalk Hospital after losing control of her bike while cycling on Ponus Ridge on Thursday afternoon.

The woman was riding downhill, northbound on Ponus near Greenley Road when she was ejected from her seat and suffered injuries to her face, falling unconscious, according to a press release from Lt. Carol Ogrinc of the New Canaan Police Department.

Members of the New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps and New Canaan Fire Department responded to the call and the woman, who had been wearing a helmet, was transported to the hospital, Ogrinc said.

No cars were involved in the crash, according to Chief Leon Krolikowski.

Cycling is a popular activity in New Canaan, which has about 40 members of an area group called the Sound Cyclists Bicycle Club. The club is seeking to place signs around New Canaan that instruct motorists to give a 3-foot berth when passing cyclists, as per state law. Thursday’s incident is the most serious reported bike accident in New Canaan since a cyclist on Smith Ridge Road collided with a car near the Field Club in October.
