New Canaan police say they were called to the Bank of America branch on Elm Street when the bank reported a man suspiciously tried to cash a check, then wasn’t able or willing to prove who he was.

Police gave this account, based largely on statements from bank employees:

The man, described as being in his early 20s, entered the bank at 94 Elm St. on Wednesday morning, Aug. 12, sometime before 10:21 a.m. (when police were called).

He tried to pass a check for $2,100, but said he didn’t have valid identification. He then refused to sign a signature card for the withdrawal. He then left the bank.

Police were called and looked for him, but didn’t find him. An investigation is continuing.
