A 72-year-old Thayer Pond Road man last week reported that at least $34,000 in jewelry—a tally that doesn’t include a 3-karat diamond solitaire ring— had gone missing from his home some time between Sept. 3 and 10, police said.
His wife last had worn a Rolex watch on Sept. 3, according to Sgt. Carol Ogrinc of the New Canaan Police Department.
Police in home burglaries typically ask whether any workers had been on the property in question. In this case, though a trusted housekeeper of many, many years works at the home, no outside workers were mentioned in a police report.
Items included in the $34,000 of missing jewelry:
- Ladies’ Rolex: $5,000
- Stainless steel Rolex: $4,000
- Gold Rolex (no value given)
- Several bracelets and earrings
- David Yurman gold choker necklace: $7,500
- Sterling silver flatware: $4,000
The man notified police of the theft at 4:19 p.m. on Sept. 10, police said. Police are investigating.

Police are investigating the reported theft of a cord of wood from a Southwood Drive home.
At about 5:31 p.m. on Sept. 12, a 49-year-old resident said the wood—located around the side of the house and worth about $750—had gone missing some time since the prior evening, police said.
The “rounds” into which the wood was divided were 1.5 feet tall and about two to three feet in circumference, police said.
Police said they could see tire track marks near the woodpile. They’re investigating.

A 57-year-old Darien woman told police last week that a wallet had been stolen from her car where it was parked near the dog run.
At about 9:07 p.m. on Sept. 12, the woman told police that some time between 6:30 and 7 p.m. that night, a wallet containing several bank and credit cards, a driver’s license and $50 in cash went missing from the car, Ogrinc said.
The woman believes she had locked her car, though no signs of forced entry could be found on her 2005 Volvo SUV, Ogrinc said.
There are no cameras on the parking lots at Waveny, though police have asked for them.
Police are investigating.
