Police after midnight Sunday arrested a 44-year-old New Canaan woman who gave officers a hard time after she was stopped for drunk-driving downtown.

At about 12:49 a.m. Monday, an officer saw a slow-moving vehicle traveling up Elm Street at a very low speed, swerving outside of the travel lane and nearly striking his patrol vehicle, according to a police report.

During a subsequent stop, the officer smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath, the report said. Asked to exit the vehicle so that the officer could conduct field sobriety tests, the woman driving the car was not cooperative, it said.

Once she did exit, the woman—an Ash Tree Lane resident—tried to pull away from police while they spoke to her, the report said.

Transported to police headquarters, she refused to undergo a blood-alcohol content test or to be fingerprinted, it said.

She was charged with driving under the influence, interfering with an officer, failure to drive right and failure to comply with fingerprint requests.

Police held the woman on $1,000 bond and scheduled her to appear Monday in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
