But the United States is NOT a democracy and the LOWV is incorrectly “educating” everyone that it is. It’s embarrassing and there is a very real difference. The US is a Constitutional Republic – deliberately so. The founding fathers expressly didn’t not want a democracy – since it can easily be taken over and become a dictatorship by a few people (based on popular vote alone). Democracy is not mentioned ONCE in the Constitution, Bill of Rights or Declaration of Independence. The founding father’s looked to older government structures to see which would best preserve individual freedom and avoid dictatorship situations and took the best from each gvt in history. They looked at the Republic in Rome and the Magna Carta and formed our special Constitutional Republic. CT is especially part of this history – having created what is considered the FIRST constitution in the world: “Fundamental Orders” written in 1639.
“It’s considered extraordinary because nowhere did it mention a king or a sovereign. And nowhere did it refer to any power outside of Connecticut. It also spells out individual rights and provides that all free men elect their representatives using paper ballots. Finally, it states the powers of the government and the limits of that power.”
This is why we are known at the Constitution State and why the CT LOWV should really start correcting this and stop calling the U.S. a Democracy – so they show they are experts in this.
America was founded as a Constitutional Republic. The Fourth Amendment Article 4, Section 4 of the Constitution states,
“The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.”
It’s a representative democracy and also, ‘Democracy Discount Day’ is alliterative. This thread is now closed.
