Police arrested a 28-year-old New Haven man following a string of pre-dawn burglaries from parked cars in eastern New Canaan last Friday.
Reports of vehicles that had been broken into or otherwise illegally entered on Brushy Ridge and Rosebrook Roads came into police throughout the morning of Oct. 9.
Based on one vigilant eyewitness’s description of a suspect in the area of Devonwood Lane, including vehicle and license plate information, New Canaan Police coordinated with other local as well as state law enforcement agencies and ultimately the suspect was found and arrested in Fairfield later that day, according to a police report.
He was charged by New Canaan Police with four counts of third-degree burglary, four counts of conspiracy to commit burglary, one count of third-degree larceny, possession of burglary tools and credit card theft. The suspect was held on $50,000 bond and on Oct. 11 turned over to Norwalk Police on an active warrant out of that agency, according to New Canaan Police Lt. Jason Ferraro. Middletown and Connecticut State Police, Troop F, additionally hold active warrants for the suspect, Ferraro said.
Three burglaries were reported on Brushy Ridge Road, and one on Rosebrook Road, police said:
At 6:40 p.m., a Rosebrook Road resident told police that a purse worth $500, credit cards, an iPad and $150 in cash had been stolen from a car parked in her driveway around 10 p.m. the night before. The vehicle’s driver’s side window had been broken.
At 10:45 a.m., a Brushy Ridge Road resident told police that a backpack and MacBook Pro as well as an iPad were stolen from a vehicle parked in his driveway. The man had heard his dog barking at 5:30 a.m. but didn’t discover the theft until 6 a.m. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the car had been locked when it was parked around 11:30 p.m. the prior night.
At 8:06 a.m., a Brushy Ridge Road resident told police that the front passenger window of her vehicle had been broken and a purse, credit cards and $150 cash were missing from the car.
A third Brushy Ridge Road theft from a motor vehicle was also reported, though details were not immediately available.
At about 7:43 a.m., a resident reported to police he saw someone riding a bike down the road, leave it in a driveway and drive off in a silver sedan, according to a police report.
Based on previous information about possible suspects for crimes committed in this manner—information that had been collected by the New Canaan Police Department’s Detective Bureau—local police notified other agencies, and ultimately a car with and driver fitting the description were stopped off of the Merritt Parkway, at a rest area in Fairfield by state police.
Based on an investigation there, the motorist was arrested, police said.
