An off-duty New Canaan Police officer on Tuesday afternoon saved a choking victim’s life at a sushi restaurant on Elm Street, officials say.

Officer Shane Gibson at about 1:35 p.m., working an extra-duty job, heard multiple emergency 9-1-1 calls through police dispatch about a person choking at Sushi 25 restaurant, according to a press release issued by Police Chief Leon Krolikowski said.
Police and members of the New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps were dispatched to 25 Elm St., where Gibson quickly evaluated the choking victim, Krolikowski said.
“Officer Gibson used the Heimlich maneuver on the victim to dislodge the food that the victim was choking on,” the chief said. “Officer Gibson saved the victim’s life. The victim is expected to fully recover.”
Krolikowski sadded; “The New Canaan Resident’s life was saved as a direct result of Officer Gibson’s training, initiative, and devotion to duty. We are all very proud of Officer Gibson and grateful for the positive outcome of this incident.”
For his timely response, Gibson will be given the Medical Service Award and will be nominated for the Red Cross Hero’s Award, the chief said.

I think that all of our emergency responders would have reacted the same way because of the kind of people they are. It’s not just the training but quality of character. My special thanks to Officer Gibson as a fine example of our public servants.
Congratulations to Officer Gibson for his concern and quick thinking. I was surprised, however, that the restaurant staff either didn’t recognize the customer’s need for assistance or know how to do the Heimlich Maneuver. Perhaps all restaurant staff should be trained to do this fairly simple and effective life-saving technique.
