Police on Thursday night cited a 20-year-old New Canaan man on minor drug charges after stopping the car he was riding in after it pulled out of the parking lot out behind Saxe Middle School.

At about 10 p.m. on May 29, a police officer saw a car that had been parked near the basketball courts behind the school, put its headlights on and pull out abruptly onto Farm Road, according to Sgt. Carol Ogrinc of the New Canaan Police Department.

The officer stopped the car at Farm and Route 106, and smelled marijuana in talking to the driver, according to a police report.

Inside the trunk of the car, he found a backpack that contained a grinder with a small amount of marijuana as well as rolling papers and two smoking pipes, Ogrince said.

The 20-year-old was cited for possession of less than .5 ounces of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
