Police at 9:35 p.m. on July 29 arrested a 19-year-old New Canaan man and charged him with driving under the influence and failure to dim his high beams.
The teen, a Heritage Hill Road resident, failed field sobriety tests after police stopped him for having the high beams on while traveling on South Avenue into town. A 19-year-old passenger, also male, was not charged.
During the stop, police smelled alcohol on the man’s breath and saw a 30-pack of beer in the back seat (with just 18 beers left in it), according to Sgt. Carol Ogrinc of the New Canaan Police Department.
Police asked the teen whether he had marijuana in the car and he responded yes, on the back seat, Ogrinc said. There, police found a pipe and grinder with a small amount of pot, according to a police report. The teen said that the gear was his own, police said.
The motorist additionally was cited for possession of less than .5 ounces of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of alcohol by a minor.
