Northeast Waterscapes: Artists Explore Oceans, Rivers, Harbors
Friday, November, 1, 2019 @ 5:30 am - 7:30 pm
$10The New Canaan Museum & Historical Society presents an impressive new exhibition, Northeast Waterscapes: Artists Explore Oceans, Rivers, Harbors, with an opening reception on Friday, November 1, from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. The reception is free to members, and $10 for all others.
The display is drawn from the personal collection of New Canaan resident and art collector Tom Davies. It features 62 paintings highlighting oceans, rivers, lakes and harbors of the Northeast. Through these paintings, Davies explores society’s fascination with the drama, danger, beauty and power of water, the crucial role it has played in the development of cities, transportation and trade, and the myriad forms it can take. Included in the exhibition are Silvermine Art guild members Addison T. Millar’s Fishing the Little Silvermine and D. Putnam Brinley’s Gloucester Harbor Colors. In addition, such artists as Phil Shumaker dramatically interprets the ocean as it does battle with the rock formations on shore in Monhegan Surf; Dewitt Clinton Boutelle depicts the harbor at sunset with numerous 1850’s vessels in Sunset on the Hudson; and Max Kuehne shows the industrialization that developed along New York harbor in Lower Manhattan.
Tom Davies is a graduate of Dartmouth College and earned an MBA from Columbia University. He had a 34-year career with Colgate-Palmolive. Davis has written numerous articles for art magazines and published Collecting Stories, a book of his extensive collection of American paintings.
The exhibition runs through December 14, 2019.
