Mark Schenker, PhD Presents Talk on Dickens: A Christmas Carol in Dickens’s Day – and Ours, at New Canaan Library
Thursday, December, 21, 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
FreeCharles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol was an enormous success as soon as it was published in 1843, and has never been out of print. New Canaan Library offers all the opportunity to usher in the holidays with a lively lecture on this famous work, presented by Mark Schenker, Dean of Academic Affairs for Yale College. The lecture will take place on Thursday, December 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Adrian Lamb Room. Please register for the program at newcanaanlibrary.org.
Among the areas Dr. Schenker will explore are the novella as providing a pattern for Dickens’s fiction; how it is a reflection of Victorian culture; how it differs from its many adaptations on stage, screen and TV; and why it continues to capture the imagination of readers around the world more than 150 years after it was first published.
Dr. Schenker, who has been at Yale since 1990, is Senior Associate Dean Yale College, Dean Academic Affairs; and Lecturer, English Academic Affairs. Born and raised in New York City, he received his PhD in English Literature from Columbia University and has taught at Columbia, New York University, and Trinity College (Hartford).
