Police have identified the man who suffered serious injuries after a motorist struck him on Route 123 Wednesday morning as 71-year-old Benjamin Olmstead, a Norwalk resident who works for the New Canaan Public Works Department.

Olmstead was marking the road with spray paint when at about 11:20 a.m., 60-year-old Francesco Sorge of Norwalk struck him while attempting to turn left from New Norwalk Road/Route 123 onto East Avenue, according to a press release issued by New Canaan Police Chief Leon Krolikowski.

“The operator immediately stopped and remained at the scene,” Krolikowski said. “The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was transported to Norwalk Hospital by New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps.”

No one else was in the car.

The Accident Reconstruction Team—consisting of New Canaan and Wilton police officers—are investigating the accident.

Police have implemented serious/fatal accident protocols “and we’re doing a thorough investigation,” Krolikowski said.

Pending notification of family members about the accident, police are not releasing more information about the victim at this time, the chief said.

“We implement that [protocol] when the injuries are serous enough that we are concerned, and our accident reconstruction team is on scene,” Krolikowski told NewCanaanite.com.

Three police vehicles were on scene shortly after noon and the northwest side of the traffic triangle there is closed off with police tape.

East Avenue between Mill Pond and 123 will be closed “for several hours,” Krolikowski said.

Preliminary findings show that the man appears to have been working in the area and was in the roadway at the time of the accident, the chief said.

“It appears he was in the road conducting work,” Krolikowski said.
